Poster for Braintree Baptist Church’s Harvest Festival service. It’s not a project I’m proud of, but it’s functional. This whole project (both making the Harvest service posters and the produce/cake sale/coffee morning posters) has made me realise that I still have a lot to learn about typography. Do serifs overhang on a grid? What about commas? Ack! I need to blow the dust off of my copy of David Jury’s What Is Typography and swot-up before practising more.

Posters for Braintree Baptist Church’s produce, cake sale and coffee morning event. These designs will ultimately be unused, but they were plenty of fun to make. The candles were revised out of the design after I realised how strongly they implied a birthday or anniversary theme (especially problematic when stacked with the huge number 22). I prefer the version with the ribbons anyway.

Vectors as per usual. (By the way, trying to work with type in Photoshop is a pain in the ascenders. Roll on, iMac and inDesign purchases.)

A quick piece of Pokemon fan art done as a gift for a friend. I’ll upload more of my original work sometime soon.

I’ve noticed recently that my vectors are usually very simplistic, which is fine for the kind of work I normally do, but I might try something more complex this summer; it would to useful to me to practice making more intricate shapes.

My final piece for the printmaking and illustration support module. The title was The First Day Of Art School. From top to bottom, this piece consists of a linocut (relief printing), drypoint, and monoprint.

I think that feeling that nothing you create is any good and the wave of doubt about whether this is the right course for you after all is something a lot of new art students go through. Or at least, that’s what happened here, though to be honest this is more like an average Tuesday for me. But then things finally click into place and it’s like “hmm, maybe there’s hope for me after all.” I just hope my work today isn’t quite as “shit” as I thought it was when I started.

Illustration for the brief The Queen Is Not Dead, to be displayed at our end of year exhibition. I wanted my design to be a non-serious poke at the fact the royal family no longer has much influence and exists to be in the public eye and attract tourists, hence my celebrity queen.

(I may go back to this and tweak the composition as it’s a bit unbalanced at the moment. We’ll see. Will update this post if I make any changes.)

Poster for the Amnesty International brief. The brief was to create a poster to celebrate Amnesty’s 50th anniversary. It could focus on Amnesty as a whole or one of the issues they focus on; this poster is for women’s human rights.

One-day studio project. The brief was to make a typographical piece of work using the assigned phrase and hand-rendered type. The type was rendered in pencil and liner pen, the other elements were done with acrylic ink and scanned textures.

Photos taken for my Mobilised, zine, Yellow Line. The brief was to take photos using a mobile device, so I hit the train stations with my old mobile phone.

If you look, train stations have an interesting aesthetic to them; a lot of sharp informational design, strong lines, wires and structures. (Admittedly the dull daily commute is just more enjoyable if you can find something to admire in it).
